  • Never leave a burning candle unattended. Make sure the candle is completely extinguished and the wick ember is no longer glowing before leaving a room or going to sleep.
  • Always keep wicks trimmed to 1/4 inch while burning. If the wick exceeds 1/4 inch extinguish the flame, trim the wick, remove the trimmings and relight.
  • Keep wax pool free of wick trimmings or other foreign matter that might present a fire hazard.
  • Always burn candles on a protected, heat-resistant surface securely placed in an appropriate holder.
  • Always burn candles well away from drafts, other heat sources, anything flammable and out of reach of children and pets.
  • Always extinguish candles by either using a candle snuffer or by blowing them out gently so as not to splatter hot liquid wax. One trick is to put your finger in front of flame and blow directly on your finger, causing the air to go around your finger and extinguish the flame from both sides. Do not use water! On jars, do not replace glass lid while candle is burning as this might crack from the heat.
  • Damaged or misshaped candles present a safety hazard: they will not burn properly. Do not light them.
  • Candle storage: Due to the temperature and light sensitive nature of wax, please be careful when storing candles for extended periods of time. Be sure that it is in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or fluorescent lights. Always store taper candles flat to prevent warping.
  • Does a candle burn longer if you wrap it in foil and put it in the refrigerator or freez er? Not necessarily. It is true that a very cold candle will burn more slowly then one that is room temperature, but it only takes a few minutes for the heat of the flame to warm the cold candle to room temperature. The few minutes you gain may not be worth the effort.
  • Do not burn your candle all the way down. Extinguish the flame when it comes close to the end. For a margin of safety, about two inches for a pillar or taper (also two inches from a decoration) and about one half inch for a container.
  • Place burning candles at least three inches apart from one another. This is to make sure that they don’t melt one another or create their own drafts that will cause the candles to burn improperly.
  • You can remove dust and fingerprints from candles by gently rubbing the surface with a piece of nylon or soft lintless cloth.
  • Votive holders will clean more easily afterward if you add just a few drops of water to the glass prior to inserting the candle and lighting. However, do not add more then a few drops and only if you plan on burning the candle right away since the wick can absorb moisture and then will not burn properly.
  • Avoid placing your candles in direct sunlight. Candles may fade if they are left in bright light for extended periods of time. In your home, rotate candles (turn them slightly) every week so that if they do fade, they will fade evenly.
  • And of course, always follow the candle manufacturers instructions included with your candle
